3. Opération (H. Laeger)
H. Laeger présente les événements qui ont affecté
le bon fonctionnement des accélérateurs ces dernières
semaines :
Incendie au BA3 (22/05/98) : Début d'incendie
du redresseur qui alimente l'équipement RF déjà source
de plusieurs d'incidents "feu". La protection du transformateur TRX1 a
vu un "défaut terre", qui a eu comme conséquence d'ouvrir
le disjoncteur. Ce défaut n'est pas signalé en PCR. Via la
commande RF, le disjoncteur a été CINQ fois réenclenché,
avec CINQ déclenchements "défaut terre", jusqu'à une
détection "feu" coté redresseurs.
Pompiers déclenchent "AU". Quatre heures d'arrêt machine
SPS.
SL/PO (G. Kowalik) et ST/RF (H.P. Kindermann) sont en discussion pour
bien comprendre la protection et apporter une amélioration de la
situation.

Coupure électrique SE4 (23/05/98) : Le groupe
de secours SE4 s'est mis en route tout seul. Apparemment, un faux signal
lui serait arrivé.
Cet incident a entraîné un arrêt de quelques circuits
d'eau glacée et de rejet, de la RF et la décharge de l'aimant
SC d'ALEPH.
Au total, le LEP était arrêté pendant 4 heures.
4. Progress report on LHC, Neutrino, Tosca, Atlas, CMS, Alice, LHC-b
J.L. Baldy présente au moyen des transparents reproduits en annexe
:
-
Les dernières nouvelles du génie civil pour les aspects administratifs
et techniques :
-
DUP : un avis favorable a été émis le 02/06
par la Commission du Conseil d'Etat. Le décret est en cours de rédaction
et la DUP pourrait donc être obtenue fin juin. La planification va
donc pouvoir être relancée.
-
Permis de construire : il a été déposé
pour le point 5 et sera déposé le 15/06 pour le Bois de Serves
et début septembre pour le TI8.
-
Signatures des contrats : le lot 2 a été signé
le 04/06 et le lot 3a le 10/06. La signature du lot 3b pourrait intervenir
fin juin.
-
Plans d'exécution : les remises se poursuivent. J.L. Baldy
signale que des modifications ont été demandées sur
le puits PM18.
-
Travaux : au niveau du point 1, la mise à niveau générale
et les terrassement de grande masse sont terminés. Le drainage et
la mise en place de la butte de terre sont en cours. Les premiers bétons
de structure devraient intervenir le 29/06. Les bâtiments seront
ensuite tous montés en parallèle pour une livraison du bâtiment
SX fin novembre.
D'autre part, les travaux de préparation et de déviation
des réseaux ont débuté au PMI2.

Les sujets d'intérêt commun :
-
Listes : la liste des correspondants ST est prête, la liste
des correspondants extérieurs est en cours d'élaboration.
-
Situation des maquettes : l'élaboration des maquettes 3D
sur Euclid suit son cours mais les moyens du groupe CE sont limités.
Des priorités devront absolument être définies, notamment
pour les points 1 et 5.
-
Schéma d'avancement : J.L. Baldy attend toujours des suggestions
pour une présentation plus claire de l'avancement des travaux.
-
INB : Tous les documents ont été envoyés à
G. Rau.
P. Ciriani indique qu'un travail important a été réalisé
au niveau du contrôle d'accès. Il en est de même pour
le refroidissement et la ventilation. Un thème INB pourrait être
traité au cours du prochain STTC.
-
Coordination ST et EST pour le transport : une concertation est
nécessaire.
-
Espace pour le secteur Accélérateur : le secteur Accélérateur
accuse un déficit de 15000 m2. P. Faugeras sera d'ailleurs invité
au prochain Comité du Site. J.L. Baldy indique qu'une action sera
probablement à entreprendre rapidement pour l'étude de sites
pour structures légères (par exemple de type métallotextile)
pour le stockage des éléments du LHC.
-
Espace pour le secteur Recherche : le programme est pour l'instant
gelé pour des raisons budgétaires.
-
CDD : J.L. Baldy demande à nouveau aux groupes concernés
de faire diligence pour l'introduction, au fur et à mesure de leur
établissement, de leurs plans sur CDD.
-
Réunions de coordination : elles sont organisées au
"coup par coup" (ex : services électriques au Point 1).
M. Wilhelmsson annonce que L. Evans est venu trouver le groupe CV afin
d'obtenir des précisions sur les estimations. Il a formulé
trois recommandations :
-
ajuster le planning financier au plus tard,
-
inclure des entreprises japonaises dans les market surveys,
-
l'inviter lors des ouvertures des offres.
Neutrino (M. Wilhelmsson)
No specific progress has been made since last STTC.
A. Scaramelli added that the project was presented in the SPC, but
for the time being, the funding is still pending. J.L Baldy pointed
out that the green light must be given at the latest in September 1998.
Otherwise the time schedule will not be respected.
Next meeting: 1 July 1998.
The first meeting concerning cooling issues took place this morning (8
June 98).
Four main areas were identified:
-
Counting rooms,
-
Each sub-detector and its front-end cooling,
-
The magnets (the “old” L3 magnet and the new dipole),
-
Temperature stability in the cavern and inside the detector.
The primary cooling sources are all dependent on these areas. We decided
to meet soon again to start the specification on firstly the magnet cooling,
which is of highest priority. From then on we will meet regularly so that
all these issues can be treated.
An up-date of all needs of cooling will be done following the ALICE
collaboration meeting, to be held in the end of June.
We have also proposed a CFD-study for the inside part of the detector
(Mentioned in the last STTC).
I explained my role as ST Co-ordinator.
We agreed to organise a meeting in the beginning of the autumn to set
up the other activities, which relates to the activities in the ST.
Comments so far on issues that I brought up:
Civil Engineering
Minor civil engineering measures to be done in the underground.
No new surface buildings are foreseen.
Heavy handling
A request for resources has been submitted from ALICE concerning on-site
Personnel. This request amounts to 6 people during 6 years (taken into
account?). L. Leistam asks especially to keep the present staff there
(M. Rosset).
Monitoring and Control
A new inventory needs to be done, concerning gas and smoke detection,
in view of future needs. P. Ciriani explained that the ALICE experiment
has not adopted the general access control concept for the underground
areas; further discussions are necessary.
Une réunion de mise au point concernant principalement le génie
civil a été organisée le 19/05.
Quelques points sont à signaler :
-
Sur demande de Mr Merlino, une étude préliminaire a été
lancée sur les possibilités techniques d'une structure en
2 volets pour l'UX.
-
Aucun détail n'a pour l'instant été fourmi au génie
civil sur le système de mise à terre. Un responsable a été
nommé : F. Szoncso.
-
Les discussions sont en cours sur le fond de la caverne UX. Le génie
civil devrait être prochainement contacté.
R. Principe fait enfin remarquer qu'il ne reçoit pas la documentation
de J. Osborne.
Le rapport sur Tosca est prêt à être publié sous
forme de note technique des divisions concernées.
Le contact a été établi avec MM. Lacarrère
et Lindner, désormais E. Cennini participe aux réunions du
Groupe EST-LEA chargé des aspects techniques pour l'expérience
LHC-b. La réunion LHC-b a eu lieu lundi 8 juin à 14:30 et
il en est ressorti les besoins suivants :
Vis-à-vis de ST/CV : Positionnement des unités
CV autour du mur de blindage de l'UX85. Des contacts ont déjà
été établit avec ST/CV mais selon M. Laccarrère
il reste à confirmer les décisions prises en fonction des
changements éventuels de Génie Civil.
Vis-à-vis de ST/CE : Mur de blindage de l'UX85. EST-LEA
effectue l'étude préliminaire du mur de blindage en collaboration
avec TIS, il nécessite néanmoins l'expertise de ST/CE afin
de finaliser l'étude et la soumettre à ST/CE.
Afin de traiter ces deux affaires, M. Lacarrère envisage une
réunion le Lundi 29 juin en début d'après-midi (heure
à confirmer) et souhaiterait la présence de représentants
ST/CV et ST/CE.
Il est apparu un problème de disponibilité de personnes
de ST/CE en ce qui concerne le traitement des détails de Génie
Civil pour LHC-b.
5. Transport LHC (S. La Terza)
S. La Terza first details:
-
What transportation activity covers:
-
any handling/moving activity for major LHC components from lorry unloading
to final tunnel installation,
-
all moving activity inside LHC tunnel.
-
Which items are affected by transport activity:
-
most of hardware functional to LHC machine (magnets, cryogenics, vacuum,
powering, electronics, chemicals, power converters),
-
infrastructure equipment (electrical distribution and data networks, air
ventilation, water cooling),
-
installation & test tooling (welding tooling, vacuum pump, X ray device).
-
Which activity areas face with transport:
-
storage,
-
preparation,
-
testing,
-
installation,
-
testing “in situ”,
-
maintenance.
-
Which type of means of transport are involved in transport activity:
-
vehicles (gantry device, wheel tractor, carriage),
-
handling machines (lifting device),
-
cranes.
He gives then a first operating/functional summary of transport work:
-
thousands of items to be transported,
-
spread of hardware to be transported,
-
three years operating time for installation and 10 years for maintenance.
He exposes then the current status of transport activities:
-
Transport vehicles:
-
identification and definition of means of transport for Dipoles and Short
Straight Sections,
-
SM18 transport dipole vehicle specification under review.
-
Overhead travelling Cranes:
-
first specification set released.
-
Preliminary dipole transport vehicle still need investigation.
-
Preliminary investigation in vehicles to be used in LHC Point 18 being
performed. Two transport devices are currently foreseen:
-
a “gantry” device (for indoor, SMA18, and outdoor operations),
-
a vehicle (for indoor, SM18, operation).
J.L. Baldy wonders why they do not use the same vehicule. In fact this
constraint is imposed by the distance of batches.
At the present time S. La Terza is performing the following tasks:
-
Identification and characterisation of all items to be transported:
-
inquiry performed, feedback from project engineers being processed,
-
continuous data retrieving from LHC database (EDMS).
-
Issuing of a document containing a complete list of hardware to be transported.
The process will be following one :
-
updated overview of the hardware to be transported,
-
transportation demand knowledge,
-
transport activity organisation accordingly,
-
means of transport rationalisation,
-
satisfy LHC needs, increase efficiency and reduce costs.
-
Review of transportation demand:
-
identification of vehicle types to be used.
-
Review and verification of transportation constraints (dimensions, weight,
acceleration):
-
collecting data from CDD (tunnel sections, shaft characteristics, etc.),
-
collecting data from engineering specifications (cranes performances, item
requirements, etc.).
ST group leaders have received the table about their transport needs. Discussion
focuses on their difficulties to fill it.
P. Ciriani explains that equipments have not been defined yet. As a
result, it is very difficult to define now their transport needs in 2004.
But on the other way S. La Terza needs to have an idea of the quantity
and the kind of material to be transported. He intends to update this table
time by time.
In fact, figures for LEP dismantling can be easiliy given. Indecision
concerns LHC installation.
H. Laeger suggests to group small items. But this idea is not adopted:
quantity is very important for S. La Terza.
S. La Terza details his future activities:
-
To keep updated the list of hardware to be transported and verifying meanwhile
relevant feasibility.
-
To prepare specifications for next transport vehicles (i.e. SMA18 transport
vehicle, transport and installation vehicle inside tunnel).
-
To follow proposed actions on LHC project management:
-
issue a reference document applicable to any technical specification referring
to hardware to be transported,
-
implement an “approval” procedure applicable to special equipment to be
transported.
-
To issue a transport reference document with the proposed content:
-
maximum allowed item dimensions along the tunnel,
-
maximum allowed item dimensions and weight through the shafts,
-
installation accuracy.
-
To make an evaluation of maximum transport dimensions:
-
according to options, to determine allowable area in the main tunnel,
-
to estimate allowed item dimensions in each LHC tunnel section.
-
To implement the proposed “approval” procedure.
-
To take a decision about monorail use:
-
An audit about monorail future applications is presently needed.
-
Issues to be analysed in details:
-
safety point of view (for people),
-
removal/replacement costs,
-
use as means of transport (depending on status),
-
cab support application,
-
driving guide application (intrinsic in arc),
-
powering application (depending on status),
-
remote inspection during warming up.
As a conclusion S. La Terza points out that:
-
A deep co-operation between project engineers and transport group
is necessary:
-
periodic hardware list updating release,
-
prompt criticality warning.
-
A unique transport reference is required:
-
EST & ST-HM divisions in charge for the overall transport management
& operation of LHC project,
-
any divisions, even though autonomously procuring transport vehicle, shall
refer to EST & ST-HM,
-
link with installation schedule shall apply.
-
All LHC transport activity shall be under direct CERN responsibility:
-
direct supplier involvement possible only with CERN supervision.
-
In order to properly address the transport activity a quick decision about
the monorail application is needed.
-
A big effort is required to manage the huge amount of hardware to
be transported during LEP dismounting, LHC machine installation and operating.
As a result a transport team structure needs to be set up.
In order to optimise its efficiency, S. La Terza suggests that only
one division should be in charge of the transport activity for LHC.
A. Scraramelli reminds that there is already a stong transport group
in ST.
6. Computational thermal and fluid dynamics analysis as support for experiments
(G. Peon, F. Anghinelli, L. Gustavsson)
Lars Gustavsson introduces the team of people in ST/CV in charge
of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations formed by Francesco Anghinelli,
Guillermo Peon and himself. A short introduction to CFD and examples of
applications are given (ex: heating and air conditioning, heat exchangers,
hazard analysis...). The CFD software package "STAR-CD" is presented together
with its computing capabilities. A justification for using CFD comes from
the fact that Navier-Stokes equation has never been solved analytically
without simplifications. The main stages in the solution process are the
pre-processing, numerical calculation and data analysis.
For illustration, three cases are presented:
-
DIRAC experimental hall (PS accelerator facility, building 157):
a parametric, thermo-dynamic steady-state and 3 dimensional study for the
design of the air cooling system. The major problem was the 3D geometry.
Results of this study are available in the Web.
-
Argon in the hall of the ATLAS experiment: a parametric, transient,
mass transfer and 2 dimensional study for the extraction of Argon gas.
This study has been launched to answer to a request from TIS. The asumption
is a major leak of liquid Argon. In that case extraction has to be very
fast.
Hypothesis are discussed, especially the 40% argon concentration. J.Inigo-Golfin
explains that they studied an emergency case.
A. Scaramelli advices to go forward into this study and apply more
realistic boundary conditions.
M. Wilhelmsson answers that CV group is already working in that way
but the analysis can not be exhaustive.
-
Quench protection for the LHC dipoles: 0 transient, thermo-dynamic
and 3 dimensional study for the discharge of the magnets' energy in case
of a quench.
En cas de quench, l'énergie accumulée dans les aimants
doit être déchargée sur des résistances (jusque
700 MJ par résistance).
Seize dispositifs sont prévus.
Le refroidissement se fera par air et eau au moyen d'un échangeur.
Le concept et la réalisation du projet sont élaborés
en Russie. L'étude de modélisation aux volumes finis confiée
au groupe CV ne consiste qu'à vérifier que, après
4 heures d'inactivité du quench, le fonctionnement de l'anneau pourra
être rétabli, c'est à dire que la résistance
sera refroidie en 4 heures.
Ce problème n'est pas simple, à cause notamment de la
complexité de la géométrie et de la difficulté
de choix d'un modèle. Il en découle un temps de calcul très
élevé : 6 jours.
Les résultats obtenus sont en conformité avec ceux de
la modélisation unidimentionnelle : la température de la
résistance tombe en effet à 293 °K en 4 heures.
Le groupe CV va cependant entamer d'autres calculs en changeant les
valeurs initiales des paramètres.
A. Scaramelli se demande pourquoi un refroidissemment air / eau a été
choisi. Il semble plus simple de n'utiliser qu'un refroidissement par eau
et de jouer sur la pression. M. Wilhelmsson rappelle que la mission du
groupe CV ne consiste qu'à vérifier les calculs thermiques
des Russes. Le groupe CV n'a pas la possibilité de changer le concept.
Il proposera néanmoins quelques modifications.
7. Divers
P. Ciriani rappelle que les sprinklers étaient auparavant sous la
responsabilité du groupe CV. Qui en a la charge actuellement ?
Une décision claire devra être prise pour la prochaine
réunion car il reste des points en suspens :
-
l'inventaire des équipements,
-
la politique de maintenance en place et/ou à établir,
-
la politique de la division par rapport à l'IS 37,
-
le type de signal transmis aux pompiers.
Le groupe CV se charge d'étudier la question.
-
Note technique sur le désenfumage
J. Inigo-Golfin annonce que sa note technique sur le désenfumage
est prête. Il compte joindre en annexe la liste des quatre véritables
installations de désenfumage.
P. Ciriani souhaiterait qu'il indique clairement que l'installation
du SPS ne constitue pas une installation de désenfumage.
En effet, les 1,5 MCHF alloués pour ce projet n'ont permis de
réaliser que la détection feu et la ventilation, et ceci
conformément à la demande qui ne prévoyait pas un
désenfumage.

INB pour le démentèlement du LEP
E. Cennini rappelle qu'un certains nombre de documents devront être
élaborés pour l'INB du démantèlement du LEP.
Les délais accordés seront certainement très courts
et il conseille donc aux autres groupes de commencer dès maintenant
à préparer leurs contributions.
A. Scaramelli demande quand le système d'alarme sur GSM sera en
place.
R. Parker explique que le système ne fonctionne pas pour l'instant
et que le groupe MC est actuellement à la recherche d'une solution
alternative.
J. Inigo-Golfin explique à J.L. Baldy qu'il n'est pas intéressé
par les maquettes CE car le groupe CV élabore lui-même ses
maquettes.
Cependant, cette méthode est dangereuse car ces plans ne sont
pas approuvés.
J. Inigo-Golfin enverra donc ses plans au groupe CE pour validation.
